What is Grog ?
Grog, few things fit as neatly into the pantheon of Classic Tiki Culture as the question, What is grog ? The history of Grog, and there is quite a history goes way back to to August 21 1740. On that day Vice Admiral Edward Vernon of the Royal Navy decreed it was good and should be drunk. In that day, life in the Royal Navy was hard, very hard. The water was foul, scurvy was rampant and the crew was almost always on the verge of mutiny. In an effort to make the crew a little more content, a daily ration of Rum was issued. Cheap and easily obtained in the Caribbean Rum was well loved and continued to be issued to all crews of the Royal Navy till the 1970’s. It was in this time frame at medical science began making the connection with citrus and stopping scurvy. The good Vice Admiral Vernon, noted for wearing a Grogram cloth coat, thus the nick name “Old Grog”, decided he could kill several birds with one stone. Ordering the crews in his squadron to mix water with their rum and add fresh lime juice, they would drink the bad water, fend off scurvy and maybe not get quite as drunk as doing rum shots. Thus The Grog is born. With a countless list of variations over the centuries, pretty much any Rum based drink with water and citrus can be called Grog, so don’ t sweat the details on What is grog and experiment till you find your personal recipe.
